Art Archives 1990 through 1999

Archived artworks displayed on this webpage include abstract paintings, relief paintings, wall sculptures, and landscapes created in Lubbock, Texas and Thousand Oaks, California. The earlier works, from about 1990 to 1992 were Lubbock art, created at the end of several cycles in my life.

This art archive page is a visual record of perhaps the most event-filled decade of my life, both personally and creatively.

My wife and I split up in 1992 (after almost 15 years together) and I moved to southern California. I was in shock, and wanted to be far from everything I knew, as my old life distintegrated.

I began to create art again rather quickly. In the Thousand Oaks, California bedroom I rented from the Pobirs family, I set up a small studio, and my storage unit became a usable woodshop space. In my "California Studio" my bas-relief paintings moved to a new level. The pieces, "Frozen Mind-Field" and "Big Rock Candy Conflagration" were born there.

The amazing scenery of California, two earthquakes, 1993 fires, and the wonderful people I met were great influences on me as an artist. But my mother contracted leukemia, and my grandmother had a fatal heart attack. My bas-relief paintings were progressing nicely, but I had no gallery connection in California at that time. And, I really needed to return to Texas to spend the little time my mother had left - with her.

1996 was an extremely productive year for me. My return to Texas did not slow me down creatively for long. I entered a period of great creative output, and reconnected with earlier Houston connections. I got some art commissions; I created a fantastic art table and the incredible room installation, and some of my best large-scale relief paintings to date.

The rest of the decade was quite productive for me artistically. The few bas-relief paintings shown here were picked to give just an idea of the creative adventure of the period.
